Tehran, Iran, Mar. 23 – Some 70 holidaymakers have been killed in road accidents in Iran since the Persian New Year which began on March 20, a senior state security official announced.
“In the first three days of the current year, 70 people died in road accidents in the country”, said Colonel Hadi Hashemi, a deputy chief of police in the Iranian capital Tehran. His remarks were carried by the government-run news agency Fars on Saturday.
Iran's highways are considered to be among the most dangerous in the world, with some 100,000 road-accident deaths occurring in the last five years, the equivalent of three deaths an hour.
