Tehran, Sep. 4 – In his Friday prayer sermon in Tehran yesterday, Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani said Iran would vigorously continue its pursuit for nuclear capabilities. He insisted that Tehran would never abandon its quest regardless of what the international community might think.

Kashani warned Western powers that any attempt on their part to stop the regime’s activities would be “crushed promptly”.

Iran’s former ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and current Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Supreme National Security Council, Hossein Musavian, told the Iranian state television, “The Europeans know that if Iran masters the technology for enrichment it has a potential for [military”> nuclear capability and that would change regional [geo-political”> equation.”

Yesterday, EU ministers chided Iran’s noncompliance with its nuclear obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Meeting in the Netherlands, the EU ministers agreed that Iran should not become a nuclear power and that it must cooperate fully with the IAEA. Foreign Minister Bernard Bot of the Netherlands said, ”We want to send out a very strong signal that we mean business.”

Kashani added, “[America”> is constantly lying; you have a different policy every day. The Islamic Republic has had a transparent policy since day one.”

Referring to the recent insurgency in Najaf, Kashani added that the crisis demonstrated the clergy’s dominance in Iraq. He said that the “plots of the enemies” [America”> had been thwarted by Shiites who are seeking to establish an Islamic republic in Iraq.

Iran has been accused by the international community as being the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. Two years ago, it was discovered that Iran had been concealing its nuclear activities for the past 18 years. Iran has also been accused by the United States and by Iraqi officials of being the main instigator of violence in Iraq, particularly in southern Iraq and the city of Najaf.
