Tehran – Iran’s most wanted criminal, Shahram Jazayeri, was arrested outside the country, the state news agency IRNA reported Sunday.

Jazayeri, convicted for involvement in the country’s biggest embezzlement case, had been in jail for five years but succeeded to escape on February 20 following a prison leave.

The embarrassing escape forced judiciary head Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi to sack the relevant judge and arrest the policemen who had accompanied Jazayeri before the escape.

A judiciary spokesman confirmed the arrest of Jazayeri but refrained to give further details.

According to local agency reports, Jazayeri had fled to one of the neighbouring Persian Gulf Arab sheikhdoms and probably arrested in Oman.
