Tehran, Iran, Mar. 18 – Iran’s Minister of Intelligence and Security confirmed on Sunday that Shahram Jazayeri, the country’s most wanted criminal, was arrested by Iranian security forces in a neighbouring country, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Jazayeri, one of Iran’s wealthiest ex-officials, had been sentenced to five years imprisonment for a major embezzlement scandal.

While on leave from prison, he fled from custody on February 20.

Radical Shiite cleric Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ezhei told reporters that Jazayeri had been arrested in one of the Gulf States and at 18:00 local time arrived in Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport from where he was transferred to Evin Prison.
