Iran takes Holocaust exhibition on tour

AFP: Iran is taking a controversial exhibition of cartoons about the Holocaust that sparked international condemnation on a tour of its provinces, media reported on Tuesday. TEHRAN, Jan 2, 2007 (AFP) – Iran is taking a controversial exhibition of cartoons about the Holocaust that sparked international condemnation on a tour of its provinces, media reported on Tuesday.

Iranians in six provinces outside of Tehran will be able to see the exhibition, which opened in the capital in August, from January 9-13. The provinces will include populous Isfahan, East Azerbaijan and Markazi.

The idea for the Holocaust cartoon exhibition originated in February 2006 in a reaction to the re-publication of Danish caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed which occurred in 2005 in a number of mainly European newspapers.

More than 1,100 entries were submitted from over 60 countries and 200 entries were put on display for the exhibition in Tehran. It is likely that these will be shared between the provinces for the tour.

The reshowing of the exhibition comes less than a month after Iran defied international outrage by staging a conference on the Holocaust which questioned the veracity of the mass slaughter of Jews in World War II.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly questioned the scale of the Holocaust and has also called for Israel to be “wiped from the map”.
