McGill Grad Jailed in Iran for Environmental Work

London, 14 Dec - Niloufar Bayani was a student of biology at McGill university before she was sentenced to jail in Iran. Bayani graduated in 2009 and later worked for the United Nations Environment Programme.

Nearly a year ago, when she went to Iran to do environmental work, the former resident of Montreal and Toronto was arrested and accused of espionage, and has been in Evin prison, outside Tehran, since then.

London, 11 Dec - According to Iran News Wire, sources report that the families of labor activist Esmail Bakhshi, and civil rights activist Sepideh Ghelian, were informed that Mr. Bakhshi and Ms. Ghelian were beaten and mistreated during a family visit last Sunday.

The two Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Factory labor representatives were detained 22 days ago on November 18th, after protests by the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Factory workers in Shush.

London, 28 Nov - Demanding medical treatment their detained colleague, a human rights activist who has been on a hunger strike for months, a group of Iranian doctors protested outside the country’s parliament.

Images of the doctors holding signs outside the parliament building in support of activist Farhad Meysami began to circulate on Monday. The lawyer who represents Meysami, Mohammad Moghimi, said in a phone interview that the protest began on Monday morning.

London, 27 Nov - Five environmentalists arrested in Iran for “spying” in January could face the death penalty after they were charged with “sowing corruption on Earth”.

Niloufar Bayani, Taher Ghadirian, Houman Jowkar, Sepideh Kashani and Morad Tahbaz, all members of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation, were focused on the conservation of different wildlife species in Iran, including the Asiatic cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus). They put camera traps down near the cheetahs’ habitat to monitor the big cats, after receiving permission from the Iranian government, but the country’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) alleged that the team was spying on Iran’s missile program.

Robert Levinson

London, 6 Dec - There are a number of American and foreign citizens that are currently being held captive in Iran. One of them is Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent, that disappeared on 9th March 2007 after travelling to Iran's Kish Island. It is thought that Iranian intelligence officers arrested him to use him as a bargaining chip with Washington. Some believe that Levinson was carrying out an investigation into cigarette smuggling.

MEPs call on EU to prioritise human rights in relations with Iran

London, 19 Nov - The human rights situation in Iran is further deteriorating amid the domestic content that has resulted in a large number of people taking to the streets to condemn the leadership for its corruption and to call for regime change.

Iran’s behaviour abroad is also worsening with terrorist attacks being plotted in Europe. The government cannot take control of the situation at home so it is lashing out at dissidents abroad.

London, 5 Dec - Human rights organisation Amnesty International has published a report entitled “Blood-soaked secrets: Why Iran’s 1988 prison massacres are ongoing crimes against humanity”. The report highlights that the Iranian dictatorship, by denying the families of the victims the right to bury their loved ones is prolonging the abuse. Furthermore, those that are looking for justice are being harassed and intimidated and many have been arrested and detained by Iranian authorities.

London, 19 Nov - Iran has been condemned by the 3rd committee of the United Nations General Assembly for its blatant human rights violations. Thursday’s condemnation marks the 65th time that Iran has been called out for its human rights record at the international level.

A draft resolution, which was introduced by Canada was adopted by the committee following a vote of 85 to 30. However, 68 countries abstained from voting. There will be a general vote at the UNGA in December.
