Iran- Drought and Sandstorms Crisis

Iran Focus

London, 1 May - In parts of Iran, especially in the oil-rich southwestern province of Khuzestan, sand and dust storms are growing in intensity and frequency.

Residents are being forced to move to cities where the weather conditions are bearable, says Javad Kazem Nasab Albaji, an MP from the Khuzestan capital, Ahvaz. State-run Iran Labor News Agency (ILNA), cites Albaji as blaming “dust particle centers” for the outward migration from his province.

London, 18 Apr - The cost of buying foreign pharmaceuticals in Iran has soared in recent weeks, which is causing major problems for Iranians who are sick or injured.

Some people reported to VOA Persian’s Straight Talk call-in show on Tuesday that some sick people have been unable to afford these imported medications and that insurance does not cover the rise, leaving the sick to pay out of pocket. In a country where one-third of the population live in absolute poverty, no one can afford this.

After years of living under Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi’s oppressive regime, the Iranian people saw the 1979 Iranian Revolution as a moment of positivity and change for the better. However, it did not work out to be anywhere near as positive as they hoped.

Supreme Leader Khomeini purged the Iranian army of anyone he deemed incompatible with the new regime and he soon came to the decision that the force needed to be highly disciplined and one that would strengthen his position.

As a result, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Basij Mobilisation Resistance Force were born. Hugely loyal to the Supreme Leader, both forces started to oppress the people of Iran. And they still do.

London, 20 Feb - In an effort to tackle issues such as poverty, exclusion and unemployment, The United Nations General Assembly has decided to annually observe February 20th as the World Day of Social Justice. However, in Iran, unemployment continues to increase.

With oil and gas and other natural resources, 33% of Iran’s population (26.4 million) still lives below the poverty line. In order to support their households, many are forced to engage in menial jobs with low wages, or dangerous jobs where they risk their lives.

State-run Young Journalist Club quoted regime economist Gholamreza Kiamehr as saying, “in light of the high price of goods and services, a family who earns less than 3.5 million toumans is considered to be below the poverty line.”

London, 15 Dec - All of the people accused of “looting” a credit and financial institution in Iran have been freed on bail, according to an official at Tehran’s Penal Court.

The looted institution, Samen al-Hojaj, went bankrupt and was taken over by the private Parsian Bank.

There are almost 50 complainants in Tehran who have registered that they have not been able to get their money back from Samen al-Hojaj, which was launched in 2001.
