Iran Uses Afghan Fighters, Some as Young as 14, for its War in Syria

Iran Focus

London, 19 Jun - Iran claims that through full use of governmental facilities and comprehensive planning, there are few voluntary Afghan fighters deployed to Syria by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).

However, Afghans are the least expensive of the IRGC’s foreign forces. Statistics show that there are an estimated 3 million Afghan citizens living in Iran, and it is reported that there is a Division of some 15,000 to 20,000 troops called Fatimids or Fatemiyoun.

Iran’s problems in Syria are growing

Iran Focus

London, 18 Jun - Iran is facing yet another problem in Syria, this time related to a border dispute between Lebanon and Israel that affects the stationing of Iran-backed Hezbollah militias.

It is no secret that Iran is facing numerous problems in Syria, from air strikes by Western powers to the general anger over the conflict from the Iranian people, but this one could seriously affect Iran’s ability to direct its proxy forces in the country.

The Israel-Lebanon border dispute, which covers occupied Palestine, has become an important topic of discussion once again as the US has proposed that it arrange negotiations between the two countries.

Iran and Russia clash in Syria

Iran Focus

London, 7 Jun - Iran-backed forces and Russian troops clashed near the Lebanese border in Syria this week, according to two non-Syrian officials in the pro-Bashar Assad alliance, after Russia deployed troops in an area that the Iranian forces, including Hezbollah, had objected to.

This conflict was resolved on Tuesday, after soldiers from the Syrian army took over the three positions near the town of Qusair that Russia had deployed to, according to one of the officials – a military commander who spoke to Reuters on the condition of anonymity. Hezbollah fighters are still stationed in the area.

Iran’s choices in Syria

Iran Focus

London, 13 Jun - Given the turbulence of the Middle East at this point in modern history, it is remarkable that the region has not erupted into a large-scale conventional war, but there are rising fears that this may happen sooner rather than later.

The problem is Syria, where a civil war became the battleground for many regional foes.

Currently arch-rivals Iran and Israel are fighting in close proximity, but Israel wants Iran far away from its borders and ideally out of Syria altogether, while Iran will not budge and is determined to prop up the Bashar Assad dictatorship to the end.

EU should pressure Iran to stop support of Assad

Iran Focus

London, 1 Jun - Europe should increase its pressure on Iran to end its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and withdraw its troops from the country, now that the US has withdrawn from the 2015 nuclear agreement, according to a Syrian opposition leader.

Nasr Hariri of the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) spoke in Brussels on Thursday about Iran’s malign influence in Syria. At this time he also pushed back against Assad’s comments about the US troops in Syria, which Assad had likened to a foreign invasion.
