Iran’s role in the elections in Iraq

Iran Focus

London, 25 Jun - It is thought that US-Iraqi relations will be damaged with the new pro-Iran Shiite-dominated government in Iraq.

When the new coalition was announced, many questioned if democracy would follow in the country. The coalition that Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has managed to form includes Hadi al-Ameri’s Fatah (Conquest) alliance. He is a Shiite extremist that also leads the Badr organization that has strong ties with Iran. During the Iran-Iraq war in the eighties, it has taken Iran’s side.

London, 29 May - In Iraq, talks about a new coalition government are underway. Many are wishing Iraq well and hope to see a stronger and more successful country emerge.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reached out to Iraq and has given hope that there will be a strategic partnership in the coming years.

Following the elections earlier this month, there was no clear leader, however it was very clear that the Iraqi people in general are looking for change and want an independent leadership that rids Iraq of the corruption and political division that has plagued the country for years. The politicians and political groups that were most successful were the ones that support this stance.

London, 14 May - Iraq is currently facing many obstacles, including unemployment, ethnic conflict, and religious intolerance, but one important issue that needs to be immediately addressed is the extent of its illegal drug trade, and Iran's role in it.

The Saudi television channel al-Arabiya reported in April 2017, that Hezbollah, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Iranian-linked elements of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) were smuggling drugs from Afghanistan through Iran, Iraq, and Turkey to Europe. The report alleged further that Italian law enforcement agencies had dismantled a nine-member Iraqi PMF cell working as part of a wider operation headed by IRGC general Gholamreza Baghbani.

London, 23 May - It has been reported that the United States has been indirectly in touch with Moqtada Al Sadr following the Iraqi election result that surprised many. Al Sadr – a former foe, has forced the US to work with his political bloc to ensure its interests in Iraq are safeguarded.

Al Sadr – a Shiite cleric – gained victory in the parliamentary elections meaning that he will be in a position to greatly influence the formation of the new Iraqi government and the appointment of a new prime minister.

On May12th, the parliamentary and local elections will take place and the government of Iraq has been taking measures to move towards reconciliation with its neighbours.
