Mass-demonstrations-Basra-in-Iraq

Iran Focus

London, 23 July - Mass demonstrations are erupting all over Basra in Iraq and are spreading to the southern parts of the country and Baghdad. Protesters are threatening to obstruct oil industry and activity with major rallies.

In terms of natural resources, Basra is one of the riches cities in the world. Basra and the surrounding areas, however, are in a complete state of disarray. Aside from corruption and conflict, Iraq is suffering the effects of being ripped apart by opposing religious and political forces. The historic canals of Basra are now full of rubbish and the city's strategic location has meant it has been trampled through by the forces that invaded the country. Basra is now rife with squatter settlements, mostly inhabited by people from rural areas trying and failing to get away from poverty. Ditches are filled with sewage.

Iran’s involvement in Iraq creates chaos

Iran Focus

London, 16 July - Chaos is spreading across Iraq like wildfire. With exceptionally hot weather for this time of year, many have the impression that they are living in hell. And it is not just the heat that is creating this feeling, it is the political climate too. There are many problems in the country and there have been for many years.

Revolutions and chaos preceded by invasions are familiar to the country and the city of Basra is particularly suffering now. An escalation of events in the southern part of the country is taking place, weakening the whole country at the same time.

Iran’s continued attempts to divide Iraq

Iran Focus

London, 29 May - In Iraq, talks about a new coalition government are underway. Many are wishing Iraq well and hope to see a stronger and more successful country emerge.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has reached out to Iraq and has given hope that there will be a strategic partnership in the coming years.

Following the elections earlier this month, there was no clear leader, however it was very clear that the Iraqi people in general are looking for change and want an independent leadership that rids Iraq of the corruption and political division that has plagued the country for years. The politicians and political groups that were most successful were the ones that support this stance.

Iran’s role in the elections in Iraq

Iran Focus

London, 25 Jun - It is thought that US-Iraqi relations will be damaged with the new pro-Iran Shiite-dominated government in Iraq.

When the new coalition was announced, many questioned if democracy would follow in the country. The coalition that Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has managed to form includes Hadi al-Ameri’s Fatah (Conquest) alliance. He is a Shiite extremist that also leads the Badr organization that has strong ties with Iran. During the Iran-Iraq war in the eighties, it has taken Iran’s side.

Iraqi election victory could spell trouble for Iran

Iran Focus

Al Sadr – a Shiite cleric – gained victory in the parliamentary elections meaning that he will be in a position to greatly influence the formation of the new Iraqi government and the appointment of a new prime minister.
