WASHINGTON, DC – Iraqi Interim President Ghazi Yawar warned Iran Tuesday against meddling in Iraqi politics ahead of the Jan. 30 elections in Iraq.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Yawar, a U.S.-educated civil engineer and Sunni Muslim tribal leader, said he was disappointed by political interference from Iran aimed at influencing the outcome of the Iraqi elections.

Yawar told the Post Iran, which is ruled by Muslim Shiites, has been pouring “huge amounts of money” into Iraq to help like-minded political parties — Iraq has a Shiite majority, but the country traditionally has been dominated by Sunnis.

He said the Iran’s methods involved money, intelligence activities and nearly daily interference in many provinces, especially in the southeast, the newspaper reported.

Yawar, who studied at George Washington University in Washington, said recently he formed his own political party and plans to participate in the election for an Iraqi National Assembly.
