BAGHDAD (AP) — The U.S. military says a Shiite militiaman believed to have recently returned from Iran has been detained with four other suspects south of Baghdad.
A statement says one of those captured is believed to have "recently returned from Iran and is seeking to re-establish his power base" in the southern city of Qurna.
It says he's blamed for planting roadside bombs and other attacks on Iraqi and foreign forces.
The military says he was captured with another militant cell leader in the area, and three other suspects were seized in other operations.
The military has claimed success against Shiite militias it says are trained and funded by Iran despite denials from Tehran. But skeptics fear the fighters will regroup and try to reassert power.
