TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran's former president and influential cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani will visit neighbouring Iraq on Monday, the official IRNA news agency reported.
Rafsanjani will visit holy shrines in Iraq and hold talks with religious leaders, IRNA said on Sunday.
His trip comes on the heels of a visit to Iran on Thursday by Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, the latest in a series of diplomatic moves between the Shiite-majority countries.
The two neighbours fought a war between 1980 and 1988 in which around one million people died but relations have warmed considerably since the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime in Iraq by US-led forces.
