London, Oct. 02 The top United States army general in Iraq said on Sunday that Iran was being unhelpful in trying to exert influence in its western neighbour.
Appearing on CNN Late Edition, general George Casey, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, said that he believed that Irans Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) was trying to infiltrate the most senior levels of the Iraqi government.
I believe they are trying to exert influence in Iraq, particularly in southern Iraq, and they are using a variety of means to do it, general Casey said.
He said that Tehran was providing financial support and trying to penetrate elements of the Iraqi government and security forces.
Iran, he said, was not being helpful to their neighbour Iraq.
Over the past few months, a string of top Iraqi and U.S. officials have accused Iran of meddling in Iraqs internal affairs.
