Tehran, Feb. 07 – One out of every ten people living in the streets in Iran are university-educated, according to the head of Social Affairs in the Tehran Governor’s Office.

Zahra Nejadbahram said, “9.4 percent of street-sleepers attending Tehran’s four day-care centres are university graduates”.

The director of the Social Affairs department said over five percent of homeless people in the country currently hold bachelor degrees.

Iran’s unemployment rate has sky-rocketed over the past two decades, with many professionals unable to find work in their own fields of expertise.

Faced with extreme poverty, many professionals attempt to start a life elsewhere in the world, making Iran the country with the highest level of “brain-drain”.
