Tehran, Nov. 23 – At least 15,000 people have been killed in road accidents in the past six months, according to a senior official of Iran’s Ministry of Health.

Ali Reza Moqisi, the head of the Accident Department of the Ministry stated yesterday that the death toll includes “people from all age groups”.

Moqisi confirmed mismanagement in Iran’s Ministry of Transport and stated that “the number of road accident victims goes up annually by 10-15 percent”.

“The country spends over 2.5 billion dollars annually for treatment of victims of road accidents”, he added.

On Saturday 18 people were killed and 52 injured when three busses collided in central Iran.

Iran’s roads are among the most dangerous in the world, with approximately 100,000 road-accident deaths in the last five years. Statistics show that one person dies every 24 minutes in Iran’s roads.
