AFP: A year after an earthquake killed 31,000 people in the southern Iranian city of Bam, thousands still need psychological help, the International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies said Monday. The impact of the quake continues to manifest itself through "sleeping disorders, the inability to complete routine tasks, explosive behavior, domestic violence and a dramatic increase in drug dependence," said the IFRC.

Iran Focus: Strasbourg, Dec. 15 – The Iranian opposition leader Maryam Rajavi was the keynote speaker at a meeting of the members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Rajavi addressed some 200 MEPs, their assistants and other political personalities during a session, entitled “The Future of Iran: Oppression or Democracy,” that was organised by “Friends of a Free Iran”.

AFP: Iran's former conservative foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati, now a top advisor to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has announced he will compete in the presidential elections scheduled for mid-2005, the student news agency ISNA reported on Tuesday. "I believe it is my duty to enter the electoral competition and the voters can evaluate each candidate's capabilities", Velayati said.

Iran Focus: Tehran, Dec. 18 - There are at least 600,000 children ‘officially’ in employment in Iran at present, according to newly released figures. An Iranian official said that the figure comprises of children under the age of 15, according to the Iranian regime’s news agency. “Unfortunately we are witnessing an increase in the number of children forced to work”, said Arash Faraz.

Gulf Daily News: Russian and Iranian officials yesterday discussed trade and economic co-operation, including a possible purchase of Russian passenger jets by Iran. The contract for the delivery of five Russian Tu-204-100 aircraft to Iran could be signed next year, Russia's Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko said after talks with Iranian Economy Minister Safdar Hosseini.

AFP: A 26-year-old Iranian man, convicted of murdering a woman, was hanged in prison in the northern city of Semnan, the conservative daily Jomhuri Eslami reported on Tuesday. Quoting local judiciary officials, the paper indentified the man, who was hanged on Monday, as Qadir Zamaemi-Fard and
said he had a history of repeated theft.
