TEHRAN, March 14 (UPI) — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad renewed his claim to Iran’s right to nuclear power on Wednesday and said it is the world, not Iran, that is isolated.
Ahmadinejad made the remark in a fiery speech in the central Iranian city of Yazd amid chants from the crowd of “Death to America,” the Alalam news agency reported.
The speech came as the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany met to discuss sanctions against Iran for refusing to cease uranium enrichment, a process that could create nuclear weapons.
Ahmadinejad struck a defiant tone against western countries and the United Nations.
“If you (the West) think that by using the institutions you created and by adopting measures you will oblige the Iranian people to yield, then you are wrong,” he said. “It is you (world powers) who are isolated and if you continue with these methods not only will you not be capable of harming the Iranian people but you will be even more isolated yourself.”
A date for a full Security Council vote on sanctions hasn’t been set but various envoys suggested it would likely come on the weekend, the report said.
