Foreign ministry undersecretary Khaled al-Jarallah summoned Iranian ambassador Ali Jannati on Tuesday and handed him an official protest demanding a probe into the incident, the official news agency KUNA said.

Local newspapers said third secretary Mohammad al-Zubi was stopped just outside the embassy by two cars and was beaten up by a group of men, while the Iranian guards did not interfere.

Zubi was taken to hospital for treatment an Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah ordered a special plane to repatriate the diplomat on Wednesday.

The Kuwaiti cabinet also held an emergency meeting to discuss the attack, whose motive remains unclear.
