The information was culled by the U.S.-based conservative think-tank American Enterprise Institute from corporate reports and Web sites, periodicals and other databases.

(Note: AEI values for numerous investments were not available so figures are likely higher.)

CHINA: at least $101.74 billion

Petrochemical, gas and oil – $96.7 billion

Banking, finance, export credit agencies – $620 million

Construction, power, energy – $3.38 billion

Military – not available

Transportation – $1.08 billion

Biggest reported project: $70 billion deal in 2004 with Sinopec to develop the Yadavaran gas field with others.

FRANCE: at least $29.9 billion

Petrochemical, gas and oil – $18.5 billion

Banking, finance, export credit agencies – $9.2 billion

Construction, power, energy – $1.15 billion

Telecommunications – $480 million

Transportation – $600 million

Biggest reported project: $4 billion deal in 2000 with Total and others for phases 9-12 of South Pars development.
