ImageTehran, Iran, Jan. 25 – The government of German Chancellor Angela Merkel has assigned the country's ex-leader Gerhard Schroeder the task of talking to Iran, Iranian state media reported on Sunday.

According to recent media reports citing Schroeder's Berlin office, Schroeder is scheduled to travel to Tehran in February, the state broadcasting corporation said on its English-language website.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has also extended support for the "mission", reported German news site RP Online.

The Saturday edition of the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung said that Iran's nuclear program will be a key topic of discussions.
