Tehran, May 10 – Iran’s navy has test-fired a domestically built anti-submarine torpedo over the weekend as part of war games taking place in the Gulf, state television reported on Sunday.

The torpedoes were fired from the Iranian warship Jamaran and successfully tracked target submarines during tests, according to Iranian military spokesman Rear Admiral Qasem Rostamabadi.

“This torpedo is anti-submarine and when fired from the warship, it automatically pursues the submarine and destroys it,” navy Commander Ayad Hassani added.

The navy’s most recent war games are due to end on Wednesday. After that, according to Admiral Rostamabadi, the Jamaran, which has a displacement of 1,420 tonnes, will be dispatched to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

With Iran’s continuing nuclear defiance and the looming threat of military intervention, Iran has concentrated recent military manoeuvres on the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf, the route for oil and other commodities shipped from the region.
