Tehran, Jun. 12 – Clashes erupted on Saturday between security forces and opposition supporters in central Tehran, an Iran Focus correspondent reported.
Around 250 people were protesting at 14.45 (local time) in Jomhouri Street, 100 metres from the Hafez bridge, chanting “Allah-o Akbar” (God is the greatest), “death to the dictator” and “death to Khamenei” in reference to Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Skirmishes were continuing between police and protestors in nearby alleyways.
Tensions in Jomhouri Street apparently increased an hour earlier when an elderly woman began chanting “death to the dictator”, triggering similar chants from others as anti-riot guards attempted to arrest her.
Eye-witnesses said a crowd prevented security forces from taking her away.
Saturday marks one year since anti-government protests took the nation by storm.
