Tehran, Jun. 12 – Greater Tehran Police Commander Brig. Gen. Hossein Sajedi-Nia said Saturday that the police will deal harshly with any attempt to undermine security and will prevent a minority from endangering public safety.

In remarks that were carried by the official news agency IRNA, Sajedi-Nia warned that the police had been given a green light to deal with ‘troublemakers’ who think they can evade justice.

He claimed that those chanting “Allah-o Akbar”, or God is the greatest, in Tehran’s northern and central districts had been identified and put under surveillance. “We will not allow any gathering or march to take shape and will deal decisively with those who would violate the ban”, the police commander said.

Despite such warnings and heavy police presence throughout the capital, clashes erupted in several areas of Tehran between opposition supporters and security forces.
