TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The Foreign Ministry summoned the German Ambassador Tuesday to protest over a scuffle at the German Embassy that sent an Iranian woman to hospital, state television reported.
The TV report blamed the embassy’s security guards for the woman’s injury but did not say what caused the Monday altercation or specify the woman’s condition. The embassy’s guards are mostly Iranian.
In Berlin, Germany’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the Ambassador had been summoned in connection with the incident, but insisted they had no reason to believe the embassy was at fault.
“We are looking into the incident, but so far have no indication whatsoever of misconduct on behalf of the embassy,” said the spokeswoman, who did not give her name in keeping with government policy.
Scores of Iranians crowd the German Embassy every morning to apply for entry visas and tempers often run high during the summer months when demand on the visas peaks.
Germany along with the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council are at sharp odds with Iran over its nuclear program, which the West says is geared toward making atomic weapons. Iran denies the charge.
