Tehran, Jul. 30 – An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted north-eastern Iran on Friday, injuring at least 110 people with one of the injured in serious condition.
The quake struck near the town of Torbat-Heydarieh in Khorassan Razavi Province at approximately 18.20 local time (1350 GMT), the official news agency IRNA said. State television said the quake lasted for 14 seconds. It was also felt in nearby towns and villages.
The quake left serious structural damages in Torbat-Heydarieh and temporarily disrupted communication networks, rescue officials said. Between 50 and 100 percent of some nearby villages were destroyed.
A 5.8 magnitude tremor jolted southern Iran on 21 July, killing one person.
