ALGIERS (AFP) — Iran’s new foreign minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, is to pay a two-day visit to Algeria next week as part of efforts to boost bilateral ties, the APS news agency reporting Monday.

APS, citing a foreign ministry statement, said Salehi was due here next Monday at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart Mourad Medelci.

It said the visit was part of a new thrust in bilateral ties in recent years, in line with decisions made by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Last November, Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia visited Tehran and held talks with Ahmadinejad on boosting bilateral ties to “correct” the world order.

Many Western governments and Israel suspect Iran of trying to develop atomic weapons under cover of a civilian nuclear programme — a charge Tehran denies.
