BAKU, July 4, 2011 (AFP) – An Azerbaijani border guard was killed in a shoot-out when a group of armed men tried to enter the ex-Soviet state’s territory from neighbouring Iran, officials said on Monday.
There was an exchange of gunfire during the clash between the armed gang and border guards in the Yardimli region of southern Azerbaijan on Sunday and a senior officer was fatally wounded, the State Border Service said in a statement.
The gang evaded arrest and fled back to Iran, the statement said.
An investigation into the incident is underway.
