Tehran, Iran, Nov. 04 – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a prayers ceremony in Tehran on Friday, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, said that the 1979 takeover of the United States embassy in the Iranian capital was an expression of Iran’s “innocence”.

On November 4, 1979, radical supporters of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini took over the U.S. embassy and took 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.

Khamenei said that the Islamic Republic had developed a strong and brave image in the eyes of foreigners.

“Everyday, the Iranian nation must move more seriously and in line with its foundations and rules towards its goals. Our nation is ready”, he said.

The Supreme Leader added that the theocratic regime’s enemies had failed to dim the “light of the Islamic Republic”.

“November 4 is the day that symbolises the Iranian nation’s innocence. On November 4, the Iranian people showed its innocence. From the documents which came out from the spies’ den (U.S. embassy), about 100 books worth of reality was exposed which were printed and available for everybody to obtain. It showed that the American government did not lose a moment to act against Iran and Iran’s national interests, especially after the victory of the [1979″> Islamic revolution”, Khamenei said to chants of “Death to America”, and “Death to Israel” from his hard-line supporters.

He said that Iran was able to conquer any goal it had, a veiled reference to the international stand-off over Iran’s sensitive nuclear work and its suspected meddling in neighbouring Iraq.

Khamenei warned the West that Iran was unwilling to give away its “rights” and vowed that the Islamic Republic would defend itself against any “injustice”.
