Tehran, Iran, Dec. 01 A senior Iranian cleric has called for all university professors to undergo Islamic training by the clergy.
Ayatollah Mohammad-Taghi Mesbah-Yazdi made the call while meeting officials at the Ministry of Health.
Mesbah-Yazdi, who is the ultra-conservative ideological mentor of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, also said that a project was underway for Islamic clerics to check all university books to ensure that all un-Islamic literature are filtered.
The Supreme Council for Cultural Revolution has thus far been indifferent to universities becoming Islamicised. All the organs of the Islamic Republic must be run according to fatwas (holy mandates) decreed by the religious jurisprudents. There is a project being carried out to change books in universities which involves clerics checking the books and picking up their mistakes, the radical cleric said.
Mesbah Yazdi, an extremist even by the standards of Irans ayatollahs, is notorious for regularly advocating the use of suicide operations to fight the enemies of Islam.
In July, Iran Focus revealed for the first time that the radical clerics weekly paper Parto-Sokhan was running weekly advertisements with an application form to enlist suicide volunteers against the America forces in Iraq and Jews in occupied Palestine.
The radical Islamist cleric holds unusual sway over Irans President and the direction of the hard-line government that was installed earlier this year.
