German lawmakers unanimously reject Iranian president’s remarks

AFP: All German political parties represented in parliament on Friday issued a joint statement rejecting the revisionist remarks of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about Israel. BERLIN, Dec 16 (AFP) – All German political parties represented in parliament on Friday issued a joint statement rejecting the revisionist remarks of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about Israel.

The lawmakers condemned the hardline leader’s statements that the Holocaust was “a myth” and that Israel should be relocated, as “totally unacceptable” and “incompatible with the norms of the international community and the history of the 20th and 21st century.”

They said that the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, “reiterates the right of Israel to exist.”

“Israel should be able to exist within internationally accepted borders, free of fear, terrorism and violence,” read a statement signed by the Christian Democrats, the Christian Social Union, the Social Democrats, the Free Democrats, the Left Party and the Greens.

The lawmakers called on the German government to continue to “oppose any policy that disputes the right of Israel to exist and denies the Holocaust.”

In a spate of recent verbal attacks on Israel, Ahmadinejad has alternately said that Israel should be relocated to German or Austrian soil and that the country must be moved as far away as Alaska.

The leaders of the European Union on Friday condemned his outbursts, saying in draft conclusions at their summit in Brussels that his remarks “have no place in a civilised political debate.”
