Iran transfers Frenchman and German to Tehran prison

AFP: A Frenchman and a German national sentenced to 18 months in jail for illegally entering Iranian waters have been transferred to Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, a family source said Friday. TEHRAN, March 24, 2006 (AFP) – A Frenchman and a German national sentenced to 18 months in jail for illegally entering Iranian waters have been transferred to Tehran’s notorious Evin prison, a family source said Friday.

“They were transferred to Evin prison 10 days ago. They can make daily phone calls,” said the source close to the Frenchman’s family who asked not to be identified.

Klein’s lawyer, Klaus Kubler, confirmed that his client had been transferred to the Tehran facility and said a new appeals process planned in the capital could be a possible motive for the transfer.

Stephane L’Herbier, 32, and the German Donald Klein, 52, were sentenced on January 24 by a court in Bandar Abbas, in southern Iran, where they were initially imprisoned.

Their sentence was upheld by an appeals court in mid-March.

The two were arrested at the end of November near the island of Abu Mussa, in an area in which waters between Iran and the United Arab Emirates are disputed.

The two men said they had mistakenly used Emirati maps that did not show the current maritime boundaries.

The Evin prison in northern Tehran is renowned for its austere conditions, and is where many who oppose the regime — from the time of the shah through to the 27-year-old Islamic republic — have done hard time.
