Karaj, Iran, May 27 – Overcrowding in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj, west of Tehran, has created extremely unsanitary conditions for prisoners. On average, 10 to 20 prisoners are added to the prison population every day. There is a shortage of prison cells, so many prisoners sleep in the corridors.
In one ward, with 422 detainees, toilets are dysfunctional and prisoners must use the toilets in another ward which itself houses more than 300 prisoners.
No soap, shampoo or disinfectants are made available to the prisoners and the prison shop refuses to sell them to the detainees. Louse is widespread, and many prisoners are suffering from digestive problems.
