London, 14 August - Isa Kalantari, head of Islamic Republic’s Department of Environment (DoE) and deputy President, warned his country’s leadership that the looming water crisis in Iran is “much more severe” than what has already been predicted. “There will be no water in Iran within less than fifty years.”

Previously, in an interview with the state-run Iran Labor News Agency (ILNA), Kalantari warned that more than 70% of Iran’s population is facing water shortage — the volume of consumption per person has passed the “critical” point.

London, 20 July - Farmers in Iran are protesting the government’s failure to deal with the severe drought problem that has left many unable to grow crops to feed the people.

Just outside the city of Varzaneh, farmers have been gathering on a daily basis, next to a dry canal that once irrigated their farms, to plead for help from the mullahs, while holding up signs that read “How long will you eat your bread made with our blood?”.

Protester Mostafa Benvidi said: “We are the people. Help the people. At night they go to bed hungry!”

London, 6 July - Last Friday, the purified-water shortage in southwestern Iran saw the staging of one of the largest water-related protests in Iran this year. Residents of the Khuzestan provincial cities of Khorramshahr, Abadan, and Ahvaz say their water supplies have been polluted for days despite pledges by Iranian authorities to quickly resolve the problem.

London, 18 July - For more than ten years, large parts of Iran have been immensely affected by drought. The rainfall in the country is currently at the lowest level that it has been for fifty years. Official figures indicate that this year has seen more than 25 per cent less rain than last year.

To make the situation even more critical, this summer is turning out to be extremely hot. This and the annual increase in the consumption of electricity is causing power shortages to become more and more commonplace.

London, 4 July - Population and agricultural growth puts a strain on water resources. Many countries in the Middle East are suffering from a water shortage due to drought as well as mismanagement. This can lead to economic and consequently political instability.

One of the most vulnerable countries is Iran, who has not developed an effective system of water supply and use.

In fact, drought poses a bigger threat for the future of Iran than the countries it considers “enemies” — US and Israel.
