Tehran, Iran, Mar. 06 – Iran’s First Vice President Parviz Davoudi travelled to Damascus on Wednesday for a three-day trip to hold talks with top Syrian officials including the country’s leader Bashar al-Assad.

Davoudi took part alongside Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Naji al-Ottri at a joint Economic Commission meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, the official news agency IRNA reported. The two sides called for expansion of political, economic, cultural, regional and international cooperation.

The two sides signed nine memoranda of understanding (MoU) on expansion of cooperation between the two countries.

IRNA said that the volume of trade between Iran and Syria stood at 200 million dollars last year.

Iranian companies are now implementing projects in Syria valued at over one billion dollars, it said.

The Syrian state news agency SANA said Davoudi would also meet al-Assad’s deputy Farouk al-Shara.

Regional allies Iran and Syria are both accused by the United States of being state sponsors of terrorism.
