Tehran, Iran, Sep. 11 – A powerful earthquake struck the Iranian island of Qeshm on the southern coast on Wednesday leaving at least seven people dead, state media reported.
The quake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck at approximately 15.15 local time (13.45 GMT), the government-run news agency Mehr reported, adding that the epicentre was in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan.
The quake left at least 47 other people injured.
In November 2005, 10 people died and dozens were injured when a 5.9 magnitude-quake jolted Qeshm which is situated in the narrow Strait of Hormuz.
