Tehran, Iran, Jul. 06 – Some 215 of the 290 Iranian Majlis (Parliament) deputies issued a public statement today attacking “pseudo-democracies” and “enemies of the Islamic Republic” for criticising Iran’s presidential elections as undemocratic.

Several Western governments have sharply criticised the mass disqualification of candidates by an unelected watchdog, the Guardian Council, and the widely-reported vote-rigging that occurred in both rounds of the recent presidential elections.

The deputies also defended the new President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the face of successive reports of his involvement in hostage-taking and assassination of Iranian dissidents abroad.

“We declare our full support for President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and we warn alien powers who want to interfere in our affairs that they must respect the vote of the people”.

The statement threatened those governments that continue to adopt “illogical political positions” with economic reprisals. The declaration was read out at the end of today’s parliamentary session.

The deputies called Iran’s elections, “the most beautiful form of democracy, witnessed by billions across the world”.
