Tehran, Iran, Oct. 26 – Thousands of people demonstrated Tuesday afternoon in the Kurdish city of Mahabad, northwest Iran, against an execution sentence handed down to a young Kurdish activist.

The demonstration was sparked after Mostafa Rassouli-Nia was sentenced to death for allegedly killing an agent of Iran’s State Security Forces (SSF) during anti-government protests earlier this year.

Tuesday’s demonstrators sounded horns and chanted slogans against Rassouli-Nia’s sentence.

They gathered in Esteghlal Square and near Hassanzadeh School and the protest soon spread to other parts of the city.

SSF units, however, attacked the protestors with teargas canisters. Clashes broke out between the people who chanted anti-government slogans and agents of the SSF.

Several hit-and-run clashes continued into the day on Wednesday.

Over the summer period, there were continuous anti-government protests in Iran’s Kurdish regions. A number of demonstrators were killed by agents of the SSF who were attempting to prevent an escalation of dissent.
