Tehran, Iran, Nov. 21 Several police intelligence officers were arrested on charges of corruption and racketeering, state-owned Persian-language websites reported on Monday.
The mid-ranking officers in the State Security Forces counter-intelligence directorate reportedly targeted wealthy company owners and were involved in several high-profile kidnappings.
They were accused of using fake warrants to arrest wealthy individuals on charges of adultery and then releasing them once a hefty bribe had been paid.
Irans police force and judiciary are among the most corrupt in the world. Though the word reshve, or bribe, is banned from the police vocabulary, the practice is very common and the word has since been replaced by shirini, meaning something sweet.
