ImageMOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia could support additional sanctions on Iran but any measures must be focused only on preventing the proliferation of nuclear materials, Russia's foreign ministry said on Thursday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said Russia wanted to continue dialogue to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem.

"If there is no visible progress in this direction, then we do not exclude the possibility of putting additional pressure on the Iranians with the help of sanctions," Nesterenko told reporters at a weekly briefing in Moscow.

"But… such sanctions must be directed exclusively on the resolution of non-proliferation tasks and not aimed at the financial and economic suffocation of this country," he said.
