The federal government has urged Iran to scrap plans to enrich Iran’s uranium, raising concerns its nuclear ambitions could further destabilise the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Iran had “nothing to gain” from pursuing its nuclear program, and warned the rogue nation not to develop atomic weapons.

Iran may face economic sanctions if countries worried about its nuclear ambitions decide to refer it to the United Nations Security Council.

Iran is adamant it should be allowed to enrich its own uranium, and has rejected a proposal that would allow it to buy enriched uranium from Russia.

Mr Downer called on Iran to reconsider its position.

“It’s our view that Iran has nothing to gain by going down the enrichment path and developing what could in the end be a nuclear weapons capability,” he told ABC radio.

“Bearing in mind the statement that the president of Iran made very recently – that Israel should be wiped off the face of the earth – you can imagine the sensitivity there is about Iran ever getting a nuclear weapons program.”
