WASHINGTON, March 16, 2006 (AFP) – High-level foreign ministry officials of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany will meet in New York on Monday to finalize their stance on the nuclear standoff with Iran, a US State Department official said Thursday.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns and his counterparts from China, France, Russia and Britain, which are permanent members of the Security Council, plus Germany, would attend the meeting, the official, who requested anonymity, said.

“They plan to finalize the presidential statement on Iran,” he said. “The immediate issue of discussion is the presidential statement but I wouldn’t be surprised if they talked about the broader issue of Iran’s nuclear program.”
