ROME - Italian Defense Minister Antonio Martino said Sunday that he hopes Iran's nuclear program dispute would be resolved by diplomatic means, Italian News Agency ANSA reported.

Iran and the European Union (EU) heavyweights, Britain, Franceand Germany, on Thursday initiated discussions in Tehran on Iran's nuclear program.

The negotiations are aimed at persuading Teheran to halt its nuclear program in exchange for trade, aid and civilian nuclear technology transfers.

The three EU countries have warned Iran that it risks UN Security Council sanctions if it fails to freeze its nuclear program by 25 November, a deadline set by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
