Annan says efforts underway for Iran talks with major powers

AFP: UN chief Kofi Annan said on Thursday that efforts were being made to arrange a meeting between Iran and the five permament members of the Security Council plus Germany over Tehran’s controversial nuclear programme. SHUNEH, Jordan, Aug 31, 2006 (AFP) – UN chief Kofi Annan said on Thursday that efforts were being made to arrange a meeting between Iran and the five permament members of the Security Council plus Germany over Tehran’s controversial nuclear programme.

“I know that attempts have been made to organise a meeting between Iran and the other six players. The meeting has not taken place yet,” Annan told a news conference in Jordan on the day a UN Security Council deadline expires for Tehran to halt sensitive nuclear work.

Asked about the possibility of sanctions against Iran if it fails to suspend uranium enrichment, Annan said the situation was “in the hands of the Security Council.”

“I would need to be in touch with the players to find out how are they intending to proceed,” he added.
