Europe’s Attempts to Save Iran Nuclear Deal Are Failing

By Pooya Stone

In less than a month, the second round of US sanctions against the Iranian Regime will come into force and Europe’s countermeasure initiative doesn’t appear as if it can actually help evade these sanctions, which could mean that the Regime walks away from the 2015 nuclear deal altogether.

London, 29 August - Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the UN, said on Tuesday at an event organised by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, DC, that she “never thought the Iran deal could be fixed”.

She said that the months that the Donald Trump administration spent consulting with other countries on the Obama-era deal could have made it a better deal, but they “couldn’t change it to be a good deal”.

London, 13 August - U.S. President Trump has had Iran on his agenda since day one of his presidency. He spoke extensively about the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that he described as “the worst” and said that he would pull the United States out of it. It took some time, but he did. And he thoroughly explained his reasons for doing so. In May he said: “We cannot prevent an Iranian bomb under the decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement. Therefore, I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.” He went on to speak about the many belligerent acts that Iran is involved with and pointed out that they were not addressed under the nuclear deal.

Iran Sanctions

London, 28 August - The reimposition of nuclear-related sanctions against Iran is a legal and justified national security measure that cannot be challenged by Tehran at the United Nations' highest court, according to the U.S. State Department Legal Adviser, Jennifer Newstead.

On August 28th, Newstead called on judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to reject Iran’s request to order the suspension of the sanctions reimposed by the Trump administration after the withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord between Tehran and six world powers that curbed Tehran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for lifting crippling sanctions.

US sanctions against Iran

Iran Focus

London, 10 August - On August 6, Donald Trump re-imposed sanctions against Iran, as he had vowed to do when he pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal in May.

These sanctions, aimed at Iran’s car industry, its trade in gold and its ability to access dollars, will harm the Iranian economy, which is already at breaking point after decades of corruption.

But the other signatories to the 2015 deal, which lifted sanctions on Iran in exchange for supposed restrictions to its nuclear programme, are throwing up roadblocks to these US sanctions.
