Ardebil, Iran, Jun. 11 – From the Grapevine…
An unprecedented scale of graffiti writing in the north-western city of Ardebil, with slogans urging people to take part in anti-government protests on the anniversary of the June uprising, has prompted local officials to mobilise the paramilitary Bassij forces to urgently paint over the slogans.
Since 8 June, all police precincts have been put on alert and members of the State Security Force patrol virtually every street and alleyway on a 24-hour basis. The two-man patrol units are heavily armed.
All Bassij bases in the city have also been put on alert and members have to protect their bases at nights. The alert is in force until the end of June.
A new centre, ‘implementing the enjoinment of good and prevention of evil’, has been set up by the Revolutionary Guards in the city and all Bassij members, previously active in similar units, have been invited and are being organised.
