Saud Al Shamsi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN

Iran Focus

London, 24 Jan - The UAE has condemned Iran for its interference in the Middle East, accusing the Gulf country of creating tension and instability in the region, during the UN Security Council’s quarterly Open Debate on the situation in the Middle East.

Saud Al Shamsi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, delivered a statement to the debate, which read: “The conflicts in Yemen and Syria clearly show that Iran is the common perpetrator. Iran has created more tension and instability in our region, posing a serious threat to the stability of the Middle East. We therefore call on the international community and the Security Council to seriously pressure Iran to end its interference and support for terrorist and sectarian militias in Arab countries.”

It is no secret that Iran and the Taliban have been involved in covert talks for many years. Until recently, the mullahs have preferred to keep their relationship with the Taliban and other terrorist groups on the down low in order to maintain plausible deniability for attacks in the Middle East and around the world.

However, earlier this month, Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), went public about Iran’s ties to the Taliban and claimed that Iran aimed through these contacts to “[curb] the security problems in Afghanistan”.

In June 2018, Iran plotted to bomb a rally held by the Iranian Resistance in Paris. Thankfully, European officials thwarted this plot and no one was hurt before the four individuals who tried to carry out the plot were arrested.

London, 9 Jan - Two natives of Iran, identified as Assadollah Asadi and Saeid Hashemi Moghadam, and the Directorate for Internal Security of the Iranian Ministry for Intelligence and Security and of individuals, an Iranian intelligence service, have been sanction by the European Union. According to a document seen by Bloomberg News, because of their involvement in an alleged bomb plot in France, the EU froze their assets on Tuesday.
