Tehran, Iran, Apr. 09 – Iran said on Sunday that it was in no rush to set a date for holding talks with United States officials over the security situation in Iraq.

“No date has yet been set for negotiations between Iran and the U.S. over Iraq. Iran is in no rush to set such a date”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi told reporters at his weekly press conference.

“Negotiations with the U.S. over this issue need preparations and planning neither of which has taken place so far”, Asefi said.

He added that any talks between Tehran and Washington would focus on the “departure of the occupiers from Iraq” and changes to U.S. policy in Iraq.

The comments by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman came days after an announcement by U.S. ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad that talks with Tehran would only take place after a new Iraqi government was formed.

The U.S. State Department hinted that the talks were being put on hold on Friday when it said that there was no timeline for the meeting. “As for whether there will be a meeting, we will see”, spokesman Sean McCormack said.
