Tehran, Iran, May 14 – Iran’s hardline-dominated Majlis (Parliament) adopted a new bill raising fines for pirating of movies tenfold, the government-run news agency Fars reported on Monday.

The new law adopted by the Majlis Judiciary Commission states that those caught reproducing or distributing pirated films will receive fines of between 10 million to 100 million rials ($1,000 to $10,000) – approximately 10 times greater than before.

The new law would also see those arrested for movie pirating prosecuted even if the company whose material had been pirated chose not to pursue the matter.
