Tehran, Iran, Feb. 16 – Iran’s top security official gave a knee-jerk reaction to a statement Thursday morning by French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy who described Tehran’s nuclear program as a “clandestine, military” project, threatening to end Iranian oil supplies to the West.

“It’s very simple: no civilian nuclear program can explain Iran’s nuclear program”, Douste-Blazy told France 2 television in an interview, two days after Tehran confirmed it was resuming sensitive uranium enrichment work, the Agence France Presse reported. “Therefore it’s a clandestine military nuclear programme”, he said.

Ali Larijani, the secretary general of the Islamic Republic’s Supreme National Security Council and Iran’s senior nuclear negotiator, said, “Diplomats should refrain from making such strong announcements”, the Iranian news agency Fars, run by the Office of the Supreme Leader, reported.

He rejected the claim that Tehran was pursuing a nuclear weapons program.

“We must not hear statements similar to what is said by the United States from European countries.

Asked whether Iran would suspend oil sales to the West, Larijani said, “We will not take the first step. But, if they act in a way that changes the situation in the region, this might be effective”.

Larijani made the comments during an interview with a French radio station.

Iran was reported to the United Nations Security Council earlier this month for breaching its international obligations regarding its suspected nuclear weapons program.
